This poor pup was bitten by the rare Eastern massasauga rattlesnake
(not terribly toxic) but is expected to make a full recovery.
"Whoop is feeling better after spending Friday night hooked up to a IV with antibiotics. Now, he’s taking two antibiotics, a painkiller, and a cream designed to promote skin growth around the bite area....
He never needed anti-venom medication, but Frye said he might need surgery if venom killed too much of the skin around the bite."
On the plus side, he wasn't bitten on the scrotum...
I'm happy the dog is doing well, but is anyone looking after the poor snake? I hope he or she is also healthy and hanging on to the little habitat it has left. We should declare a moratorium on all building and development in the area. Think "North America".
"The species has struggled to survive as these fields have been drained or filled in for farmland or development. Mature females tend to give birth to five or six live young every three to four years. Half the babies usually don’t live through the winter.“The massasauga is more critically endangered than the bald eagle ever was,” Ballard said.
